DONNA STEEL

Donna Steel works as a Transition Coordinator at the Philadelphia Academy Charter High School. She started as a Special Education teacher in 2005, and as the needs of the Life Skills department began to evolve with students remaining in school until 21 years of age, so did her role and responsibilities.  This was an exciting time for Donna in her career as she established a transition program, providing meaningful opportunities for young adults with special needs to be involved in the community, mainly through supervised (unpaid) work experiences.  Being an integral part of a transition program that has often resulted in paid supportive employment for individuals, has been incredibly rewarding; especially because earlier in her career, Donna worked with older adults with special needs who grew up in institutions and were not afforded such meaningful opportunities.
