Lynn Roman is a graduate of Temple University where she participated in a research study involving learned helplessness with incarcerated youth and adults that led her to a career with Juvenile Probation in Philadelphia in 1974.

Her work began as a line staff member assigned to cases in the “badlands” of North Philadelphia and elsewhere.  Supervisory responsibilities began in 1983 and expanded when she assumed multiple duties as Deputy Director in 2004 until retirement in July 2013.

Over the years, she volunteered for extra duties, trainings, and certifications and was assigned to a wide array of special units.   These opportunities included Correctional Group Counselor/Probation Officer, Prevention Services, Functional Family Therapy training in 2001 as the liaison/grant facilitator, Parenting Program responsibilities specializing in “Destructive Adolescent Behavior” (certified by www.parentproject.com in 2003), Juvenile Probation representation in National Child Homicide Death Reviews and research in Philadelphia., statewide Aftercare Initiatives and Standards, and most recently representing the Chief JPO in the statewide Family Involvement initiatives including the first “Train the Trainers” program  in 2012.

Her general philosophy is that in all of the above experiences, it has been clear that parents and families hold the key to improving the behavior of children …even when they don’t know it, are angry with “the system”, or feel helpless. Schools, Children & Youth, Probation, and other agencies must work closely with the parents and support their efforts, whenever possible, for as long as we are involved with their children.  These combined efforts will generally promote safer communities and get the children closer to reaching their full potential.
