Honoree:
Walter Kee, Jr.

Barbara Flanagan Memorial Education Award Winner

a tribute by David Blyweiss
David Blyweiss taught in the Cheltenham School District for 34 years.
He is currently a professor at Manor College & Community College of Phila.

I had the pleasure of meeting Walter Kee, Jr., last September at New Courtland’s Education Center, as he joined our English 098 evening class. I knew right away that I was going to like Walter, because he sat right up front, laughed loudly, participated enthusiastically, and made all of us around him feel like we were his life-long best friends.

Once our first semester ended, Walter again joined me for another course, English 101, and he currently takes that class every Friday night from 4:30 -8:00 PM. You would think that after a hard day’s work at the end of the long workweek, he would come in dragging. Nope, not Walter. As a matter of fact, Walter has been someone who has shown great leadership qualities because of his energy, his enthusiasm, and his desire to work cooperatively with others. He has shown himself to be a compassionate and thoughtful man, and Walter is one of those students who make teaching a pleasure.

Just as a good student needs to demonstrate certain qualities and characteristics, so does a good nurse. Often, those characteristics overlap, such as effort, compassion, empathy, dedication, and devotion. Walter has shown us those characteristics in class time and time again, and I am positive that he will demonstrate those same attributes in his promising career as a nurse. It was a pleasure to write this tribute for Walter, just as it has been my pleasure to know him and to teach him this last year.
